Chinese bakkies vs Hilux and Ranger: which hold their value?
Nearly one in five new vehicles sold in South Africa in September 2026 had a Chinese badge. Do Chinese bakkies and SUVs lose value faster, and are they dragging used Hilux prices down? VEQRO priced 26 used versions from current South African ads on 7 and 8 October 2026. The short answer: the popular Chinese models hold their value about as well as the established names. Some others don’t.
The Chinese surge in numbers
South Africans bought 61 645 new vehicles in September 2026, 12.7% more than a year earlier. Chinese brands that report to naamsa sold about 11 100 of them, roughly 18%. Chery alone sold 3 004, more than Kia (1 840), Renault (1 711) or BMW (1 396). GWM followed with 2 700, then Jetour (2 036), Omoda & Jaecoo (1 503) and BYD (659). MG, Geely and Leapmotor don’t report to naamsa, so the real share is higher. Source: naamsa’s September 2026 flash report, via MotorPress.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Isuzu D-Max 250 Hi-Ride | R479 900 | R399 990 | 73 000 | 83% | 9 |
| Toyota Hilux 2.8 GD-6 Raider auto | R668 300 | R549 900 | 70 000 | 82% | 5 |
| GWM P-Series 2.0TD LS | R461 900 | R379 900 | 69 000 | 82% | 8 |
| Nissan Navara 2.5DDTi SE | R489 900 | R389 999 | 96 000 | 80% | 5 |
| GWM Steed 5 2.0VGT SX | R324 900 | R249 900 | 77 000 | 77% | 4 |
| GWM P-Series 2.0TD LT | R526 900 | R399 900 | 83 000 | 76% | 7 |
| Ford Ranger 2.2TDCi Hi-Rider XL | R449 400 | R329 900 | 107 000 | 73% | 6 |
| JAC T8 2.0CTi Lux | R417 400 | R279 900 | 79 000 | 67% | 7 |
| Ford Ranger 2.0SiT XLT 4x4 | R632 800 | R419 900 | 100 500 | 66% | 11 |
The badge alone doesn’t decide it. A 2022 GWM P-Series LS kept the same share of its price as a Hilux and a D-Max, about 82%, and more than a Navara. A JAC T8 Lux kept 67%. The plusher P-Series LT kept less than the LS (76%), a common pattern: buyers of used bakkies pay for the bakkie, not for the extras.
The Ford Ranger is the surprise at the bottom. The 2022 Ranger is the last of the old shape, and an all-new Ranger replaced it soon after, which usually pulls down the price of the model it replaces. The Rangers in these ads had also done more kilometres: about 100 000 against 70 000 to 80 000 for most of the others.
Same money: a new Chinese double cab or a 4-year-old Hilux?
This is where the Chinese bakkies really bite. A new JAC T9 2.0 Lux double cab lists at R549 900 (January 2026), exactly what a 2022 Hilux 2.8 GD-6 Raider auto with about 70 000 km asks in today’s ads. A new GWM P300 2.4T LS double cab lists at R529 900; a new Hilux 2.4 GD-6 Raider double cab, R618 200. When a new bakkie with a full warranty costs the same as a used one, sellers of average used bakkies can’t push their price much higher.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Isuzu D-Max 1.9TD LS auto | R616 500 | R499 700 | 62 000 | 81% | 4 |

| JAC T9 2.0 CTI Lux | R549 900 | R394 900 | 55 000 | 72% | 4 |
After about two years the new Ranger has held its value well (79%), and the JAC T9 has dropped fastest (72%). Only one 2025 BYD Shark 6 was for sale: R904 900 with 20 100 km, against R959 900 new. One ad is too few to call a value, so check back next month.
Chinese SUVs: the same pattern
2022 compact SUVs: list price new vs what they ask today
| SUV (2022) | New | Worth now | Typical km | Kept | Ads |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8 XS | R390 100 | R334 900 | 48 000 | 86% | 12 |
| Haval Jolion 1.5T Premium | R349 900 | R299 995 | 48 000 | 86% | 20 |
| VW T-Cross 1.0 TSI Comfortline | R365 100 | R299 900 | 43 000 | 82% | 7 |
| Chery Tiggo 4 Pro 1.5T Elite | R324 900 | R259 900 | 59 000 | 80% | 10 |
| Hyundai Creta 1.5 Premium | R389 500 | R289 790 | 51 000 | 74% | 11 |
The Haval Jolion had more ads than any other car in this check (20 for one version and year) and kept the same share of its price as a Corolla Cross. The Chery Tiggo 4 Pro sits with the VW T-Cross, and both Chinese SUVs kept more than the Hyundai Creta.
So, are Chinese cars killing the used market?
Not the way the headlines suggest. In VEQRO’s checks, the popular Chinese models hold their value about as well as the established names, and used Hilux and D-Max prices are still high. What has changed is the choice: R400 000 to R550 000 now buys either a new Chinese double cab or a three- to four-year-old Japanese one. That puts pressure on sellers asking top money for an average used bakkie, and it makes the exact version, kilometres and condition matter more than ever.
Before you buy or sell a bakkie
- Compare the same version
In January 2022 a Hilux 2.4 GD-6 Raider double cab listed at R535 000 and a 2.8 GD-6 Raider auto at R668 300. Check the engine, the gearbox and 4x2 or 4x4 before you compare two prices.
- Price new against used
Before you pay R500 000 or more for a used double cab, see what that money buys new, with a warranty and service plan.
- Kilometres
Most of these 2022 bakkies had done 70 000 to 100 000 km. One well above that should ask less; one well below deserves a look at the service book.
